- Read-Only Mode First: Create a read-only storage user in your EMC array. Use that account in the utility for discovery and reporting. Only switch to an admin account for actual changes.
- Version Control: Keep a known-good copy of the utility executable. Some “cracked” or “updated” versions found on forums contain malware.
- Audit Logs: Enable the “Log All CLI Commands” feature. Output the logs to a network share. This provides an audit trail.
- Avoid Concurrent Sessions: Do not run EMC Utility Pro while Unisphere or another CLI session is modifying the same objects. Naviseccli does not handle session locking well.
- Modern Alternative: For production, consider learning PowerShell with the EMC VNX Module or Ansible collections for Dell Storage. They offer similar automation without the GUI dependencies.
