At the beginning of the movie, Tony Stark is presented as a brilliant but arrogant billionaire whose wealth is built on the destruction caused by his weapons. This persona is challenged when he is kidnapped in Afghanistan by a terrorist group using his own technology. Forced to build a missile, Stark instead creates a primitive suit of armor to escape, an act that marks the birth of Iron Man and his moral awakening. This transformation is realistic because it is driven by trauma and the sudden, harsh realization of his legacy's cost.
The terrorists, led by a mysterious figure known only as "The Ten Rings," demanded that Tony build a missile system for them. But Tony had other plans. Using his intelligence and resourcefulness, he began to build a suit that would help him escape.
Tony pretends to cooperate. Instead, he convinces Yinsen to help him build something else: a miniature arc reactor to replace the car battery, and a suit of powered armor to escape.
Tony arrives in the Mark III. The fight is brutal — Iron Monger is stronger, but Iron Man is faster. They smash through walls, over cars, into the street.
Pepper finds Tony barely alive. She slams a spare, older arc reactor into his chest, restarting his heart.
