Takeshi Hongo
The story follows (Hiroshi Fujioka), a brilliant college student and motorcycle racer who is kidnapped by Shocker , a mysterious terrorist organization with Nazi roots. Shocker transforms Hongo into a grasshopper-themed "kaizō ningen" (cyborg) intended to lead their world-domination efforts. However, Hongo escapes just before the final brainwashing step, retaining his humanity while gaining superhuman strength and speed. Kamen Rider 1971 - 1973 -English Subbed-
- Episodic format: Most episodes are self-contained “monster of the week” stories. This makes the series easy to dip into, but a through-line builds gradually—especially in later episodes—creating genuine progression.
- Repetition: The formula can feel repetitive, but the show often refreshes it with unusual character-focused installments or darker tonal shifts.
- The Rider: Charismatic and stoic. His silent resolve and physicality carry most episodes; subtle moments—glances, hesitations—suggest a haunted interior life.
- Supporting cast: Varies episode to episode. Some characters are thinly sketched, but several stand out with memorable, tragic arcs that make one-care about this pulpy world.
- Villains: The Shocker organization and its monsters are gloriously over-the-top: grotesque designs, theatrical evil plans, and a feel of industrial menace that’s oddly compelling.
Do not marathon this show. It is 98 episodes of formula. Savor the first 13 (the "Hongo Horror Arc"). Then jump to Episodes 14-26 (the "Ichimonji Wandering Arc"). Watch the double-Rider team-up episodes (53-55). Then the finale (92-98). The Birth of a Legendary Franchise: Kamen Rider
