Mayuka Akimoto was born in Saitama, just north of Tokyo. She joined in 2011 as part of the group’s inaugural 1st Generation members. Nogizaka46 was created by Yasushi Akimoto (no relation) as the “official rival” of AKB48, emphasizing elegance, sophistication, and a less overtly “cute” image.
Akimoto's interest in the performing arts began when she was just a child. She started taking dance and singing lessons at the age of 6 and soon began appearing in various stage productions and commercials. Akimoto's entry into the entertainment industry was facilitated by her participation in the popular Japanese reality TV show "Produce 48" in 2018. The show, which aimed to form a new girl group from a pool of talented trainees, provided Akimoto with a platform to showcase her skills and gain widespread recognition. Although she did not make it into the final lineup of the girl group Iz*One, Akimoto's exposure on the show helped her secure a recording contract with a Japanese music label.
