5.3 Firmware Compatibility
- MPTool (Mass Production Tool): To fix a PS2307 drive, you don't look for a simple
.exeupdater. You look for the MPTool specific to the PS2251-07. - The Fix: This is a low-level factory software used by manufacturers. Technicians use it to "re-flash" the controller. They can set the true capacity, change the serial number, or even unbrick a dead drive.
- The Trick: A seller would take a 4GB or 8GB drive with a PS2307 controller and reprogram the firmware to tell Windows it is a 512GB or 1TB drive.
- The Result: The drive appears to work. You drag files onto it, and the progress bar moves. However, the controller is simply writing over the same small memory space repeatedly in a loop. Once you fill that initial 4GB, your old files get overwritten and corrupted, while the new files seemingly disappear.
