• Childhood (Ep. 1–8): Protagonists Saki, Satoru, Maria, Shun, and Mamoru live in the utopian town of Kamisu 66. They discover that children who fail to control their cantus “disappear” — later revealed to be killed by the Ethics Committee. They also encounter the “Monster Rat” (Bakenezumi) colonies.
• The Summer Camp (Ep. 9–12): The group learns that humans without cantus were genetically modified into the subhuman Monster Rats. They witness a “Karma Demon” (a psychic runaway case) and a “Fiend” (a human with cantus but no empathy).
• Adolescence (Ep. 13–17): Shun loses control of his cantus and is euthanized by the village. Maria and Mamoru flee, are presumed dead, but actually raise a child that becomes the Fiend.
• Adulthood (Ep. 18–25): Saki and Satoru become members of the Board of Education. The Monster Rat colony led by Squealer (a genetically modified rat) declares war on humans. Squealer creates a Fiend (Maria’s child) to slaughter human villagers. Saki discovers the truth: Monster Rats are not animals but modified humans.
