Curtis eventually reaches the Engine, where he meets Wilford (Ed Harris). Wilford reveals that the revolution was engineered by him and Gilliam (John Hurt) to reduce the population and maintain the balance of the train's closed ecosystem. He offers Curtis the position of engine driver. Horrified by the revelation and the realization that the train's ecosystem relies on child labor, Curtis rejects the offer.
