XMeye-Linux Review: The Unofficial Lifeline for Linux Users in a Sea of Windows-Only Surveillance Apps
xmeye-linux
is a Linux-based client application and SDK for interacting with XMEYE series DVRs, NVRs, and IP cameras — devices commonly sold under brands like Hikvision, Dahua, or generic Chinese OEMs (e.g., "Xiongmai" technology). It's often used to:
-
- Audio from camera to PC: Works. The app uses ALSA/PulseAudio. Audio sync is within 100ms of video.
- Two-way talk (PC to camera): Partial success. On two of the five cameras I tested (both generic XMeye firmware), speaking into my laptop’s mic and clicking the “talk” button transmitted audio, but it was choppy and low-volume. On the other three cameras, the button did nothing. The official Windows CMS has the same inconsistency – this is an XMeye firmware limitation, not the app’s fault.
